Street Sweeping

Corvallis Street Sweeping

The City of Corvallis is committed to help keep our City beautiful and improve the water quality of our urban streams. Pollutants in the street (fluids from vehicles, debris, pet waste) are carried by rain water runoff into the storm water system. Most of the water which flows to a catch basin does not go to the treatment plant, but drains directly to one of the creeks that run through our community. Street sweeping helps remove pollutants that are on the streets before they enter the storm water system.

The frequency of street sweeping is most significantly influenced by the presence of leaves.  During that time of year when trees are dropping their leaves, roughly September through February, we schedule streets to be swept twice a month.  During the rest of the year, streets are swept once a month.

Only paved public streets with curbs receive regular sweeping service from the City.  Street sweepers rely on curbs to sweep against, and are much less effective at removing debris when curbs are absent. Sweeping of paved public streets without curbs is provided on a limited basis, typically once in the fall and once in the spring.

The Central Business District is swept weekly, typically on Mondays, but this may vary based on equipment and operator availability.

If you live on a paved public street with curbs, you can find out when your street will be swept by identifying the sweeping district you live in on the sweeping districts map, and then checking the schedule below for your district.

How You Can Help

Cooperation from the community is key to the success of the Street Sweeping Program. Here are ways you can help:

  • Move parked vehicles from the street the day your street will be swept.
  • Place leaves and Christmas trees in the street only during the periods identified in the annual Fall Leaf and Christmas Tree Collection Program.
  • Never place grass clippings, tree limbs, bark mulch, rock, garbage, or other debris in the street.
  • Remove grass or weeds that grow in the gutter to reduce debris accumulation and improve water runoff during rain storms.
  • Report abandoned vehicles to the Police Department: Abandoned Vehicle Report Form.
  • Properly trim the trees in the park strip so the sweeper can clean next to the curb.

Leaf Collection

The City of Corvallis works in partnership with Republic Services to collect leaves and Christmas trees from City streets during the fall leaf and Christmas tree collection periods.

Our Commitment to Service

We are committed to providing Corvallis with consistent and efficient street-sweeping service. Your help moving vehicles and garbage/recycling bins from the street on the sweeping day is critical in insuring that all streets are properly swept.  Because of the volume of streets in our system, we will not be able to return to sweep locations blocked by vehicles and bins until their next scheduled date.

From time to time we are forced to vary from the identified schedule due to inclement weather or mechanical difficulties.  When this happens, we will make every effort to get to your street, but may have to vary our schedule to do so.  If you have any concerns or questions regarding street sweeping, please contact the Corvallis Public Works Department at 541-766-6916.
