Safe Streets for All (SS4A) Project
Starting in mid-2024, Public Works will begin a new transportation planning project to develop a Safety Action Plan (SAP). The SAP will build on the City’s 2019 Transportation System Plan (TSP). An SAP is a document that reviews transportation-related crashes involving vehicles, pedestrians, or bicycles to find trends and identify strategies to reduce crashes throughout a city. SAPs are comprehensive safety plans aimed at reducing and eliminating serious injury and fatal crashes, and use data analysis to characterize roadway safety problems and strengthen a community’s approach through projects and strategies that address the most significant safety risks.
In addition to the SAP, the SS4A project will include gathering and analyzing additional safety data, performing specific road safety audits on Walnut Blvd, Circle Blvd, and 9th Street, developing neighborhood traffic management and speed limit policies, and creating a safer crossings plan to help develop guidelines for the City to respond to community member requests.
The work products funded with the SS4A federal grant (Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant Program | US Department of Transportation) will fill existing safety related gaps and build off of the strong foundation set in the 2019 TSP planning effort. This relationship creates a unique opportunity for Corvallis to realize its transportation safety objectives with a data-driven, equity-oriented approach.
By increasing safety for all road users and emphasizing active modes, this project will also help meet the City's climate goals as identified in our Climate Action Plan and Strategic Operating Plan, as well as Oregon's broader statewide goals for Climate Friendly Areas.
