City of Corvallis Increasing Enforcement to Reduce Waterway Pollution

Storm drain in city street

Corvallis Public Works is increasing enforcement of City's ordinances relating to pollution discharge. Per regulations laid out in the Corvallis Municipal Code, City staff will be increasing inspection of streams and issuing more violation notices. In addition, staff will increase outreach to the local businesses and the general public, advising them to call the city when spills are observed.

The increased enforcement comes after a period of stepped-up education and outreach in 2018. City staff provides pollution prevention education and outreach to numerous groups, businesses and schools, and at public events. Pollution prevention can be as simple as remembering that most of our storm drains lead directly to our creeks, and that only rain should go down the drain.

Pollution can make its way to Corvallis's waterways in numerous ways, such as car oil flowing into a storm drain and then into a city creek. Even a small amount of pollution discharge can result in a notice of violation.
