Irrigation Hotline Offers Summer Watering Advice

Lawn irrigation spilling into the street

Corvallis Public Works has launched a seasonal irrigation hotline to share weekly information on water use, as well as tips on conservation. The hotline is intended as a companion resource to irrigation information that is published online at www.corvallisoregon.gov/irrigation. The hotline can be reached at 541-766-6733.

Community members who choose to irrigate only need to apply enough water to replace soil moisture lost through evaporation and through the life cycle of plants. This process is called evapotranspiration and the exact amount varies throughout the year.

Public Works advises property owners to ensure that their irrigation system is tuned up and ready for summer use. This is an opportunity to adjust sprinkler heads to keep water on lawns and landscaping -- not sidewalks or driveways. It’s also a good idea to calculate your system’s application rate so you will know how to long to run your system to achieve the irrigation levels in the weekly guidelines.

Public Works will update the irrigation guidelines on a weekly basis through the summer and fall, both on the website and via the telephone hotline.

Irrigation guidelines are developed based on data from a weather station north of Corvallis. For more information on irrigation in Corvallis, go to www.corvallisoregon.gov/irrigation.
