Van Buren Bridge Closed for Police Activity

At approximately 8:24 AM on Friday, September 27, 2024, Corvallis Police Officers received report of a 25-year-old male Corvallis resident seemingly suffering from a mental health crisis. The male was reported to be potentially armed and a danger to himself before leaving his home in his vehicle.

Officers located the male’s vehicle in the downtown area. After initiating a traffic stop, the male proceeded to stop his car near the intersection of 1st St. and Van Buren Ave and refused cooperate with officer commands. For public safety due to the report of potential firearms, command staff requested the shut down of the Van Buren bridge, and a public notice was sent to Corvallis residents to use alternate routes.

The Corvallis Police Department was assisted by Benton County Behavioral Health staff. After two hours of communication, officers and behavioral health workers were able to resolve the incident peacefully. The male was subsequently transported for mental health evaluation. The Van Buren bridge reopened to the public at approximately 11:07 AM.
