Police Response at Cheldelin Middle School
On October 17, 2023, at approximately 11:30 am Corvallis Police Officers responded to Cheldelin Middle School at 987 NE Conifer Blvd for a report of a student on the roof. An officer and a member of the C.O.R.E. (Crisis, Outreach, Response, and Engage) team talked with the student trying to convince him to come down and diffuse the situation. A fire truck with a ladder was summoned so the student could come down safely, however the student eventually got off of the roof without the ladder and ran from police in the direction of the Jackson Frazier Wetland.
Officers and administrators at the school continually assessed the danger to the student as well as any danger posed to students attending the school, staff, and nearby community members throughout the incident. The school was temporarily placed into a “SECURE” status while the incident unfolded, meaning all points of entry into the school were locked and classes continued as usual.
The student was last seen in the area of the Jackson Frazier Wetland. Officers conducted a comprehensive search of the area trying to locate the student with the assistance of a drone unit from the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, however the student has yet to be located.
While our search for the student is ongoing, we do not believe there is a current threat to the school or community.
