Hello There Corvallis

Corvallis Parks & Recreation presents ‘Hello There Corvallis,’ an initiative designed to educate and address the challenges of mental health and social isolation in our community. By highlighting how Parks & Recreation programs bring people together in inclusive settings, we foster stronger bonds and a true sense of belonging.

To kickstart your connections, Corvallis Parks & Recreation is hosting a Speed Friending event. Speed Friending is a fun, lighthearted and easy way to break the ice and start getting to know new people. Afterward, you'll have the opportunity to deepen those new friendships over a fun conversational board game while discovering all the ways Parks & Recreation helps build community and connections through its many activities, classes, and events.

Builds Friendships

Parks & Recreation Builds Friendships!

Making friends as an adult can be tough! Parks & Recreation programs, such as volunteering, joining a class, or playing in a sports league, create opportunities for deeper personal connections based on mutual interests and trust.
Why it Matters. Friendships offer emotional support, boost well-being, and provide companionship and understanding, leading to a more fulfilling and balanced life.

Teaches Sportsmanship

Parks & Recreation Teaches Sportsmanship!

It's all about teamwork, respect, and the love of the game. Parks & Recreation sports leagues and fitness classes offer more than just a way to stay active and fit—they also foster social skills, sportsmanship, and friendships.
Why it Matters. Learning to play fair, show respect, and embrace positive values enhances our interactions and helps create a more supportive community.

Improves Mental Health

Parks & Recreation Improves Mental Health!

Hanging out in the virtual world is great, but hanging out in the real world is even better! Parks & Recreation offers social opportunities that boost mood and confidence, lower stress, and build strong connections.
Why it Matters. Strong social ties help combat loneliness and depression, resulting in greater happiness and improved overall health.

Adds Structure

Parks & Recreation Adds Structure!

Friendship takes time and effort. It takes 40–60 hours for acquaintanceship to casual friendship, 80–100 hours for deeper friendship, and about 200 hours to establish a close bond, with ongoing effort required for maintenance! Parks & Recreation’s scheduled classes and leagues create more structure by providing regular engagement with others with common goals.
Why it Matters. Spending time in regular recreational activities, fosters a shared sense of purpose and  feelings of accomplishment, and provides regular commitments that participants can look forward to.

Creates Community

Parks & Recreation Creates Community!

Parks and recreation activities, events and classes bring people together to share experiences that promote cooperation, support, and inclusion.
Why it Matters. Being part of a community enhances well-being through a sense of belonging, support, and shared purpose.
