Tenant Move-Out Resources

Moving out is a big job. Tenants routinely underestimate how much “stuff” they have accumulated and often get caught short of time (and boxes) to move properly. This webpage provides resources to help tenants properly dispose of unwanted furniture and excess garbage without incurring fines.

It is expensive to leave your couch on the curb.

Placing uncontained solid waste in the public right-of-way or in a yard is a violation of the Corvallis Municipal Code and carries a fine of up to $2,500. Illegal dumping includes garbage and glass that overflow the collection bin as well as couches, chairs, mattresses, and appliances offered for “free.” During key move-out periods, city staff identify illegal dumping issues and contact property managers. Property managers typically deduct the cost of disposal from the tenant’s security deposit and may add a service fee. Planning ahead and disposing of unwanted items can save tenants money and may even generate some cash.

Every unwanted item has a place to go.

The guide below provides information to help tenants determine how to dispose of their unwanted items.

  • Trash: Items that are no longer useful or cannot be recycled are considered trash. Contact Republic Services at 541-754-0444 to schedule a pickup. Costs range from $30-$40 per item for couches, chairs, and mattresses.

Is your trash bin overflowing? Contact Republic Services to schedule an extra pick-up. An extra pick-up is $28.

Find your trash pick-up schedule, glass recycling schedule, and answers to other sanitation questions on the Republic Services website.

  • Donations: Furniture, mattresses, kitchen utensils, and other materials that can still be used should be donated. Options for donations include:

Donation Directory - The Corvallis Sustainability Coalition publishes a comprehensive list of local donation centers. Check it out!

OSU The Great Move Out - Oregon State University invites students to bring items they will no longer want or need to a drop-off event at the end of the school year! Donated items will go to local nonprofits for reuse. Please visit this website to stay up-to-date on the current years plan for the donation drive. Want to donate but cannot make it? Check out the Corvallis-Area Reuse Directory for a list of places that accept goods.
