Meetings and Events

On Monday, January 20, the community is invited to visit the Corvallis Museum to learn about the principles of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and how each of us can strengthen our community.

Organized by the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion advisory board, the learning experience is intended to introduce the community to key voices and student leaders, while providing families with an enriching experience on a day when schools are closed.

Hosted at the Corvallis Museum, which will be open and free to the public from noon to 4 p.m. on Monday, community members are invited to participate in activities including:

  • 1:30-1:45 PM: Storytime with Corvallis Ward 2 Councilor Briae Lewis, to learn about Dr. King and social justice
  • 2:30-2:45 PM: A presentation about race, culture and empathy, led by Corvallis School District high school and middle school students who are members of the District’s Students Advocating for Equity (SAFE) initiative
  • 3:30-3:45: The importance of building community through dialogue and service

In between, visitors are encouraged to watch brief videos about Dr. King, explore the museum, learn about the MLK Park transformation, and complete a fabric square reflecting personal commitment to community betterment. Up to 100 squares will be stitched into a quilt, donated by local nonprofit Sandpiper Project and displayed at the Corvallis Museum during Black History Month.

The Corvallis Museum is located at 411 SW 2nd St. in Corvallis.
