Fire Department Annual Open House & Safety Fair on Oct. 21 and 28
October 15, 2023 - The Corvallis Fire Department's annual Open House & Safety Fair will take place on Saturday, October 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the downtown fire station (400 NW Harrison Blvd.) and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, October 28 at Station 6, 544 NW Lewisburg Ave. Visitors may tour the facility, learn important fire safety behaviors, explore the fire station, see how firefighters prepare for emergencies, interact with other community safety organizations, and meet members of the Corvallis Fire Department.
This year's fire safety theme is: “Pay Attention to Fire Prevention.” The Corvallis Fire Department wants to share these key home fire escape planning tips:
- Make sure your plan meets the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
- Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home. Smoke alarms should be interconnected so when one sounds, they all sound.
- Know at least two ways out of every room, if possible. Make sure all doors and windows open easily.
- Have an outside meeting place a safe distance from your home where everyone should meet.
- Practice your home fire drill at least twice a year with everyone in the household, including guests. Practice at least once during the day and at night.
This year’s Fire Prevention Week runs from October 9-15 and commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 where the two-day blaze killed more than 250, left 100,000 more homeless, and destroyed more than 17,000 buildings.
