Corvallis Fire Leads Hazmat Response in Southwest Corvallis

Firefighters wearing hazardous materials gear make entry into Oregon State Credit Union.

December 7, 2023 - The Corvallis Fire Department responded to a report of a suspicious item received in the mail at Oregon State University Credit Union’s Sunset Operations Center, located at 4800 SW Research Way in southwest Corvallis.

The call came in around 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 6. Corvallis Fire advised credit union employees as well as a police officer on scene to evacuate the immediate area. Fire officials sought and received approval from the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s office to activate a joint hazardous materials response team to assist with the call. HazMat Team 5, consisting of members from Corvallis and Albany Fire Departments, responded to the scene with two HazMat apparatus, joining a medic unit, a fire engine, and a battalion chief that were already on scene.

HazMat members made entry in appropriate HazMat gear and used special monitoring equipment to check the area for any possible hazardous material. HazMat members concluded after investigation that no hazardous materials were involved.

Shortly after, the site was cleared and employees were permitted to return and resume work.

Corvallis Fire would like to thank the quick response from the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s office and the speedy mobilization of HazMat Team 5. These incidents are rare, but the public should rest assured that Corvallis is well served by trained mutual aid teams in the mid-valley area.
